At Apex, we’ve built our directory by applying consistent vetting standards to every roofing, siding, window, and gutter contractor we recommend. This page walks you through our process and gives you tools to verify contractors yourself—because your confidence matters, and it shouldn’t rest on our word alone.

The Detail

Licensing & Registration: Every contractor in our directory holds active state licensing for their service area and trade. Maine’s licensing requirements exist to protect property owners, and we verify these credentials before anyone is listed. If a contractor works in specialized areas like skylight installation or standing seam roofing, we confirm they hold the appropriate endorsements or certifications.

Insurance & Bonding: We require proof of general liability coverage and workers’ compensation insurance. These aren’t paperwork formalities—they protect you in the event of injury on your property or workmanship disputes. Contractors without proper insurance are not featured in our directory.

References & Track Record: We contact customer references directly and ask specific questions about project quality, timeline adherence, and professionalism. A single complaint doesn’t disqualify a contractor, but patterns of poor communication or unfinished work do. We also check how long contractors have been in business; newer companies aren’t ruled out, but we want to see evidence of established standards.

Industry Standards: According to NRCA Roofing Guidelines & Resources, industry standards set expectations for everything from material quality to installation technique. We reference these standards when evaluating contractor practices, and we look for contractors who are familiar with and aligned to them. This is one of the things we check before we put a name on this page.

Certification claims are easy to make and hard to verify—except they aren’t. You can confirm a roofing contractor’s manufacturer certification directly at GAF’s contractor verification tool. If a contractor claims to be a GAF-certified installer, this tool will tell you whether that’s current and active.
